The United Way of Lamar County announced today that Jaxson Higgins is the recipient of the first annual $500 scholarship.

Jaxson Higgins is the grandson of Bill and Patricia Higgins and a 2018 graduate of Prairiland High School. He will be pursuing a nursing degree in Durant, Oklahoma.

The United Way of Lamar County’s annual $500 scholarship is open to all graduating Lamar County high school seniors. Applications are available in the spring. Eligible graduating seniors must also have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, have two letters of recommendation, and write a 500-word essay explaining how they benefited from one of the United Way of Lamar County’s Partner Agencies.

“We were so excited to receive Jaxson’s application and his essay touched all of us. On behalf of the United Way of Lamar County’s Board of Directors I can tell you we are very proud that Jaxson is our first scholarship recipient, and we know he will achieve great things,” said Jenny Wilson, Executive Director of the UWLC.
