The North Lamar High School Concert Band, under the direction of Jason R. Smith, competed in the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading contest Wednesday, April 3 at Mt. Pleasant High School.

For their prepared three pieces of music, Peacemaker March by K. L. King, Willows of Winter by BJ Brooks, and Ride! by Samuel Hazo, they earned the highest rating of ‘Superior’ from all three judges.

Following, the band performed a piece of music unfamiliar to them for three different judges. For this portion of the contest, they also earned ‘Superior’ ratings from all three judges.

The band earned the UIL Sweepstakes trophy for receiving ‘Superior’ ratings in both Concert and Sight-Reading. This marks the ninth consecutive year under Smith that the band has achieved sweepstakes.

“This year’s concert band was a great group of students,” said Smith. “Some the music we choose was off of the hardest grade level set by UIL Music, and they performed it amazingly.”
