Earlier this week, Texas legislators considered House Bill 896, a bill that would call for women who abort a child to be charged with murder.
HB896 would remove the exception in the penal code for criminal homicide that applies to women and medical professionals, allowing them to be charged with the murder of an unborn child, according to CBS DFW.
“A living human child, from the moment of fertilization on fusion of a human spermatozoon with a human ovum, is entitled to the same rights, powers, and privileges as are secured or granted by the laws of this state to any other human child,” the bill states.
If the bill goes into place, a blanket ban on abortion statewide would go into effect.
The bill was left pending in committee after a hearing that ran until 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
