Five people are dead and four are injured after a multi-vehicle accident on I-30 this morning.
According to Sylvia Jennings, Titus County Department of Public Safety officer, at about 7:15 a.m. Mount Pleasant Police Department was called to a crash at mile marker 165 on I-30 near BUS 271.
“That crash involved a Uhaul towing a trailer,” Jennings said. “The Uhaul truck and trailer ended up crashing and rolling, blocking both lanes of eastbound I-30.”
That crash, Jennings said, caused traffic to back up. About an hour later, traffic was backed up to mile marker 162.
“At 8:20 a.m., traffic was completely stopped because of the first crash,” Jennings said. “An 18-wheeler, for a reason unknown as of yet, struck a minivan.”
The minivan was pushed into another 18-wheeler, which hit another 18-wheeler.. which hit another. In total, five vehicles were involved in the second accident, Jennings said.
“The driver of the initial 18-wheeler that hit the minivan is dead,” Jennings said. “The minivan had five people inside. The driver was airlifted to a hospital in Tyler, Texas, with critical injuries. In the back were a mother and her three children, all of whom are now deceased.”
The drivers of the other three 18-wheelers struck from behind were treated for minor injuries and were transported to Titus Regional Medical Center.
The left lane of eastbound traffic. The names of the victims have not yet been released.
