The Boys and Girls Club of Paris, TX has been operating in this community for over 75 years, aiming to help all youth who need them most. Their goal is to be a part of young lives as they develop into productive, responsible, and caring citizens.
The Boys & Girls Club opens it’s doors to roughly 70 children daily, including a mentor program that connects volunteers to at-risk youth and works to encourage academic success and personal growth through one-on-one communication.
Recently, a group of students fundraised enough money to start a vegetable garden, and pioneered their own program called “Operation Empower”.
”Curt Fendley a 5th grader at Crockett Intermediate School started Operation Empower. Operation Empower is a group of 2nd – 6th graders within the Boys and Girls Club of Paris developing leadership skills. Through hands-on experiences, they are learning real life skills such as gardening, simple woodworking, cooking, etc. They are using these skills to improve their club. All their projects are planned and managed by the youth. By doing this Operation Empower is allowing the kids of the Boys and Girls Club to learn the value of volunteering and that they can make a difference in their community. So far they have built tetherball sets and a vegetable garden. The garden produce will be used by the members of the Boys and Girls Club. They welcome anyone that would like to come volunteer! “assistant executive director – Daon Savage
He went on to explain that when he began his position at the Club the program mostly revolved around sports. Savage was excited that this new program brings diversity and an expansion of valuable life skills.
“They’ve already started a garden, built a tetherball set-up, and a few other projects as well. It’s been a great hit.” – Daon Savage
