A celebration for Juneteenth is set for Saturday in Paris. The celebration will begin with a parade at 11 a.m. starting at Martin Luther King Boulevard and 20th Street N.E. Line-up will begin at 10:30 a.m. and a $5 fee will be charged to be in the parade.
This year’s theme will be “Our unity is more powerful than an atomic bomb,” said organizer Yulanda Reeves.
“We have a 7-year-old grand marshal this year for the parade,” Reeves said. “His name is Jer’Kedain Brooks. Last year he had an infection in his right lung, which was removed in March of 2018. In the past year, he has overcome all odds and we will be celebrating him. We’ll also have a lemonade stand at Leon Williams Park to raise money to send him to Sea World.”
The parade route will start at MLK and 20th Street N.E., down MLK, left on Fitzhugh, right on Tudor, left on 3rd Street N.E., right on Lamar Avenue, right on 7th Street N.W. and straight on to Leon Williams Park, where the celebration will continue.
The celebration at Leon Williams Park will include DJs Treetop out of Dallas and Behn out of Paris.
“Our theme for the event at Leon Williams Park will be a carnival theme. We’ll have face painting, a prayer circle, games, a scavenger hunt and much more,” Reeves said. “We’ll also have hot dogs for the children.”
Leon Williams park is at 7th N.W. Street and Henderson. For more information, call Reeves at 903-491-2122 or Samantha Hughes at 469-735-7486.
