The city and county are both pushing the Texas Department of Transportation to widen Hwy. 271 and Hwy. 82 in Lamar and Red River counties.
“The complete widening of these two highway corridors will place Lamar County at the literal crossroads of major multi-lane highways with great connectivity in all directions to some of the largest industrial and commercial hubs in the country and the world,” said TxDOT officials.
Lamar County Judge Chuck Superville said the complete widening to four lanes of US Highway 271 and US Highway 82 in Lamar and Red River counties will increase the safety and efficiency of travel on these highways, promote economic development, create jobs, better connect our community to the rest of the world, and help to reduce congestion and air pollution in the metroplex by diverting traffic off of Interstate 30 and onto US Highway 82.
Mayor Dr. Steve Clifford agreed during Monday evening’s city council meeting, saying TxDOT is developing its 2019 Unified Transportation Plan, which should be completed by December of this year. The plan, he said in his proclamation, will determine which projects receive funding – and he hopes the widening is one of those projects.
