According to Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith, the driver of the vehicle was driving northbound on Hwy. 19/24 when a tire blew out throwing sparks from the rim of the wheel.

The sparks then caught the tanker on fire which was carrying unleaded gas. The driver of the vehicle, Kerry Bell of Winnsboro, Texas, was uninjured.

L3 of Greenville, Texas, is on scene spraying foam on the truck and surrounding area to extinguish the fire. According to the Cooper Fire Dept. the road will be closed for an extended period of time to allow the road to be repaired. Motorists can expect detours throughout the remainder of the evening and possibly through the night.


5:50 p.m.

Mark Tackett with the Texas Highway Patrol said a diesel tanker wrecked and exploded on Hwy. 19/24 near the Sulphur Springs exit around 5 p.m.

No reports on the driver of the vehicle have been released.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and take alternative routes if possible.
