Do not fear || Positive Thoughts Contributor by Cory Jones

Well, the Christmas season is now in full swing! Sure, Hobby Lobby has had their seasonal stuff out since mid-July, but with Thanksgiving now over, it’s official! Trees are going up, lights on houses flash the night away, and the local downtown Christmas parade has come and gone (and with it, Santa on a fire-truck… truly making it seriously official!). But as joyous as all that is, fear can easily creep in and destroy what should be the “most wonderful time of the year.”

It’s all too easy to get caught up on the commercial side of things and worry about not being able to provide just the right gift for a child. For some, a doctor’s report leaves them wondering if they’ll even have a loved one with them on Christmas day. For others, tensions have caused a division that is more than palpable at family gatherings. But Scripture clearly states that fear is not from God. (2 Timothy 1:7 – “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” also, we know 1 John 4:8 – “God is love” and verse 18 – “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…”)

This is also illustrated throughout the Christmas story. In the Gospel of Matthew and also that of Luke, we see their accounts of the events that led to Jesus’ birth. It begins with the story of an angel appearing to Elizabeth that she was to bear a son (John the Baptist) that would prepare the way. An angel separately appears to her husband while he was working at the temple. Six months later an angel appears to young Mary to inform her of God’s favor on her life. This angel speaks to her fiancé Joseph as well. And then, a whole multitude of angels appear to a group of shepherds “tending their flock at night.” What’s amazing about all these appearances, is the common line used each time by the angels. “Fear not!” or “Do not fear!” Each time God’s plan was being presented, His messenger would begin with “Do not fear!”

So the same, I believe His message is to us today… Do not fear! Don’t get caught up in the drama that plays out across the news daily. Don’t get overwhelmed with the latest prophecy of when the world is going to end or America’s economy will crash. Not that we aren’t aware (and even studied) on these things, but we aren’t afraid of them.

While some may trust in what they see in the natural, we will trust in the name of our God! For those who are in Christ, our hope rests in Him! And if I trust in Him, what (or who) shall I be afraid of? God’s message to you this season, shown through the life, death and resurrection of His Son, is that He loves you this much. Do Not Fear!
