Natural Electrolyte Drink

Erin Finch

As it heats up this summer, we all will inevitably sweat more, especially those of you who workout or play sports regularly (particularly out in the heat) and work or play outside a lot.

It will be important for all of us throughout the summer to stay hydrated with more than just water to replace important electrolytes that are lost when we sweat.

Rather than grabbing a Gatorade or Powerade or any other commercial electrolyte drink you can buy at the grocery store, try opting for this homemade natural electrolyte drink. This homemade electrolyte drink is free of brominated vegetable oils, artificial flavors, colors, and refined sugars like high fructose corn syrup, all of which are extremely damaging to your health and are the main ingredients in most popular sports drinks.

The recipe below, taken from The Performance Paleo Cookbook by Stephanie Gaudreau, requires only three ingredients:

Coconut Water: An incredible source of potassium (one of the main functioning electrolytes that our body needs to prevent cramping).  In fact, it has 13 times more potassium than Gatorade and much less sugar. Any sugar that is in coconut water is natural anyways.

Sea salt: Rich in several dozen trace minerals and provides another essential electrolyte needed for proper muscle and nerve function, sodium. While coconut water is an excellent source of potassium it is lacking in this essential electrolyte, thus sea salt is necessary to this recipe to create a balanced electrolyte drink.

Unsweetened 100% pineapple juice: This special ingredient provides a decent source of fruit-based glucose. Glucose is important, especially after a rigorous workout, for refilling muscle glycogen. Glucose is stored within each muscle cell as glycogen and is a quick-burning fuel used during high intensity exercise.  Even if you aren’t working out at high intensity and don’t necessarily need the extra glucose to refuel your muscles, this special ingredient will at least add a delicious flavor you will be sure to love!

Coconut Water Electrolyte Drink

 Makes, 4 servings

  • 2 cups unsweetened coconut water
  • 1 cup unsweetened 100% pineapple juice
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt. (I like this brand.)
  • Optional add in for added nutritional benefit: 1-2 scoops vital proteins collagen peptides. This product will add a high quality source of protein as well as provide support for the gut, immune system, bones, joints and skin. Adds no flavor at all and can be mixed in with each individual serving.

*Mix all the ingredients in a glass jar and store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
