Healthy Chili for Mom and Baby



As a new mom, finding healthy recipes that not only I like but my baby girl likes as well is a huge win. We both get good food in our belly and I only have to cook once! This is the dream as a mother because we all know how picky kids can be no matter how hard you try.


Whether you have kids or not, this recipe is one that everyone will love. Not only is it  delicious, but it is packed with antioxidant rich vegetables and anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids from the grass-fed beef.

To make this a baby friendly recipe, do everything the recipe calls for up to adding in the seasoning. You technically could serve it to your baby with all the seasoning, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It would be a lot of sodium for your little one and they might not like or react well to all the spiciness. To avoid this, let the chili cook up until the last hour without the seasoning, then scoop out the desired amount of chili you want to serve your baby for the week, puree it in a blender until smooth and then store in a mason jar in the fridge until ready to serve.  I try and scoop out mostly veggies with a smaller amount of the grass-fed beef. The grass-fed beef will provide your baby a rich source of iron as well as omega 3 fatty acids, both of which are extremely important for healthy development, but too much might be hard on little one’s stomach if they aren’t used to a lot of animal protein. Once you’ve gotten the amount of chili you want for your baby out of the pot, you can then add in all the seasoning the recipe calls for and let it cook for another hour for you and the rest of your family to enjoy.

As a side note, my baby girl is currently 14 months old. She tried and loved this recipe around 11-12 months. Once you’ve introduced each of the foods in this recipe individually, and you know your baby doesn’t react negatively to them, give this recipe a try for something different!

Crock-Pot Beef and Vegetable Chili


  • 2 lbs. grass-fed ground beef or buffalo (purchase at local grass-fed farm here)
  • 1 onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 bell peppers (1 of each color ideally), diced
  • 3 large carrots, diced
  • 3 stalks celery, diced
  • 3 zucchini, diced
  • 2, 28 oz. cans organic crushed or stewed tomatoes
  • 1, 15 oz. can of organic tomato sauce


  • 1 ½ T. chili powder
  • 1 T. oregano
  • T. basil
  • 2 tsp. cumin
  • 1 tsp. salt (ideally a natural more mineral rich source like the brand Real Salt)
  • ½ tsp. cayenne


  • Top with fresh avocado slices or serve on the side for baby for some additional healthy fat they need for their quickly developing little brain!


  1. Sauté onion and garlic in a saucepan and then add in the grass-fed ground beef and cook through. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Transfer the cooked meat mixture to a crockpot
  3. Add all vegetables and give it a good stir. Add in all the seasonings if just making for you, or leave these out until the last hour if making for you and baby. See additional instructions above if making for baby.
  4. Cook on low for about 6 hours
  5. Serve warm and top with optional
