A fundraiser to benefit athletes in the area with special needs is set for tonight starting at 6 p.m.
Benefitting a group called the Lamar County Contenders, the Feed the Flame fundraiser will be at the Paris Texas Elks Lodge, 2110 36th Street N.E.
“The Lamar County Contenders, Paris, Texas, is a Special Olympics team made up of individuals with mental and/or physical disabilities who have completed high school,” said organizer Bill Taylor. “We solicit donations to support these special athletes in their pursuit of competition with other like competitors.”
The organization is made up of coaches and volunteers who give their time to the success and enjoyment of these athletes, Taylor said.
“There are no paid individuals,” he said. “All the donations go toward providing uniforms, transportation, food and lodging for these athletes. Unfortunately, there are no government subsidies that pay for them to compete in the Special Olympics.”
Tickets are $30 apiece and include dinner, live and silent auctions and entertainment by Cas Haley and Montgomery Moore.
