Community pulls together to give Miss Georgia a Christmas of a lifetime

People from Paris and beyond pulled together over the past two weeks to make sure 91-year-old Georgia Heuser, known by many as Miss Georgia, had a Christmas she will never forget. It started with Lamar County Human Resources Council’s Executive Director, Shelly Braziel’s, Gifts of Love program. Each year, Meals on Wheels recipients are given a form to fill out. It includes questions such as age, favorite color, hobbies, etcetera. Traffic violation leads to drug bust in Lamar County

A man is behind bars after deputies say they busted him with 2 pounds of pot when he was stopped for a traffic violation. Late last week, Lamar County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped Cornelio Loewen, 25, on Hwy. 19/24 for a traffic violation. “During the traffic stop, deputies could smell an odor of marijuana coming from the driver,” said Lamar County Sheriff Scott Cass. Cass said deputies began searching Loewen’s vehicle and found about 2 pounds of marijuana, along with ampules of cannabis oil, and more. Five students accused of sexually assaulting a classmate

Five Pleasant Grove Middle School students are being investigated for sexually assaulting a classmate on a bus trip home from Paris. According to Texarkana Police Public Information Officer Shawn Vaughn, the assault is believed to have happened to a 13-year-old girl on the way back to Pleasant Grove after a basketball game in Paris on Nov. 30. Vaughn said the investigation began Dec. 1 after the victim’s mother reported the incident. Felony warrants were originally issued for five students ranging in ages 13-14. Hit-and-run lands one man in the hospital

Police are investigating after a man was hit by a car early this morning. He was taken to Paris Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries. Around 4:30 a.m., Paris police officers were called to the 300 block of 20th Street N.E. for reports of a hit-and-run. Paris Police Lt. John Berry said when officers arrived, they were told an unknown person driving a white, 4-door sedan struck the man as he was walking. “The suspect vehicle did not stop,” Berry said. “The complainant alleged that he was struck in the left thigh.” The man was taken to Paris Regional...

Man allegedly assaults officer while being arrested for child pornography

Bonds have been set and information about the original arrest has been released for a Powderly man accused of owning hundreds of child pornography photos and assaulting a public servant. Jimmy Wayne Carr, 50, was arrested around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday by Paris police officers and Lamar County sheriff deputies for possession of child pornography. While he was being arrested, police reports indicate Carr assaulted an officer by punching him or her in the face and later kicking them. The officer reportedly sustained minor injuries.
