NLHS students named to All-Region Orchestra

Eight North Lamar High School students have earned a place in the All-Region Orchestra. On Nov. 15, band students from Region 4 and 21 met at Longview High School to compete for a place in the All-Region Orchestra.  “With only about 25 places in the ensemble, the competition is very tough,” said North Lamar Associate Band Director Jason R. Smith. North Lamar had eight students earn a place in the ensemble, which will perform Dec. 2 in Longview. Those named are Iyanla Hawkins (1st chair flute), Jayden Franklin (2nd chair flute), Parker Freeman (1st chair bassoon), Laura Carl (2nd chair bassoon), Dylan Holiday (1st chair bass trombone), Seth Carter (1st chair tuba), Ashton Carter (1st chair percussion) and Sam Greenwell (2nd chair percussion). North Lamar staff raise funds for Texas Oncology patients

North Lamar ISD recently presented a $750 check to the Texas Oncology Patient Foundation. The money was raised by contributions accumulated from North Lamar’s Jean Week where staff pays to wear jeans for the week with the proceeds going toward helping others in the community. Tammy McGuire, North Lamar representative and creator of the monthly jean week drive, delivered the donation to Ewell Byrd, practice director, who accepted on behalf of Texas Oncology. Paris Junior College art department presents awards

The Paris Junior College Art Department gave out awards in five categories during an opening reception for fall student artwork Nov. 14. The exhibit includes works from Art Appreciation courses and three studio classes, Drawing I, Design I and Photography (three levels). This semester’s contest juror was Frances Robinson, a local artist and President of the Art Study Club, which meets at PJC and was founded in 1949. Dylan’s Drivers Thanksgiving holiday hours

Dylan’s Drivers will not be operational Thanksgiving Day in order to allow volunteers to spend time with their families.  Rides will be offered Friday and Saturday during regular hours from 10 p.m.-3 a.m. with last calls being accepted up until 2:30 a.m. Anyone who wishes to get a ride should call 903-905-4959. Cats face tall rebuilding task on the court

Day one of the post-Jalon Pipkins era was a rough one for the Paris Wildcats boys basketball team as they dropped their season opener Saturday at 18th-ranked Class 3A Van Alstyne, 74-52. Pipkins, the all-state guard who led the ‘Cats to a 105-12 record and back-to-back regional tournament appearances during his four seasons on varsity, is now playing collegiately at Cal State-Northridge. The problem for Paris head coach Billy Mack Steed is that Pipkins took his 21-point scoring average with him.
