The mural, located on the exterior wall of a building on the north side of Market Square, was originally painted in 1985 with the help of art students from Paris Junior College.
Since then the painting has faded and Mainstreet Coordinator, Cheri Bedford, called on local artist, Lena Spencer to help bring it back to life.
“We rallied some troops together to help get the job done,” said Spencer, owner of NXS Art Studio. “I’m really grateful to have the help of Brandi Peel who teaches art at North Lamar and her students as well as a group of local homeschool students.”
The project is funded by the Mainstreet Office through funds raised from hot chocolate and popcorn sales over a number of years at holiday events.
“The Mainstreet advisory board has had this on the agenda for several years now,” said Bedford. “We’re just really excited to see Lena Spencer bring in local students to make memories will restoring living art in our city.”
Bedford also expressed that an ongoing goal for the board is to bring more art into the downtown area, and this painting is a result of that goal.
