Services are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 23rd, at Bright-Holland Funeral Home with Bro. Patrick Cannon officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Meadowbrook Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Grounds, the son of Arthur Vernon & Martha Haney Grounds, Feb. 2, 1938, in Paris.
He retired from the United States Army as a Supply Sergeant following a career that spanned twenty years, one month and six days. During this time he saw combat in Vietnam. Following retirement from the military he worked a number of years for Norman Montgomery delivering fuel.
John enjoyed walking and hiking for which he received numerous medals. He also enjoyed traveling, especially by train. John’s father worked for the railroad, and he always had a fascination with trains.
He was a member of the Blossom Church of Christ.
John was preceded in death by his parents, siblings; Margie Dozier, Frances Flanery, Sarah Denison, & Betty Thompson, nephews; David Dozier, Billy Ray Flanery and Herman McClain along with a great nephew, Robert Davis.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruth McClain of Paris and Camilla Smyers of Waco, numerous nieces & nephews whom he thought of as his children; Leonard Dozier, Carolyn Dozier, Diane Wallace, Gaynell Dozier, Rhonda Bradford, Susie Doyal, Anna Jean Gould, James Flanery, Catherine Jordan, Chris Thompson, Larry Denison, Phillip Denison, Ruth Ann Davis, Annette Cogburn, Mike McClain, Mark McClain, Harold McClain, Martha Thompson, Paul Thompson, Ron Smyers & wife Lisa and Greg Smyers & wife Jennifer, his caregiver for six years, Deborah McClain along with numerous great nieces & great nephews.
Casket bearers will are Greg Smyers, Ron Smyers, Tom Davis, Phillip Denison, Larry Denison and Tommy Davis.
