Both the varsity boys and varsity girls Paris High soccer teams won in last night’s matchup. Meeting up at the Sulphur Springs stadium to battle it out for the chance at the next round, the Ladycats defeated the Mabank Panthers in a thrilling overtime game. The Wildcats showed up determined to win, as they shutout the Athens Hornets for an easy win.

“Although we knew we had to put goals in the net early and finish the game strong, we were calm and confident heading into the game,” said senior Kobe Dixon.

The Paris varsity boys had an easy night against Athens as they completely shut them out from start to finish.  Crushing Athens and not letting up until the final whistle with a final score of 7 – 0, the ‘Cats had an outstanding game as they move one round closer to the state championship.

The Paris varsity girls had a close game as Mabank took the lead in the first half, with a score of 1 – 0. However, with pure determination, the Ladycats tied it up in the second half sending the game into overtime. An even matchup, neither team allowed a score in OT and that is just where the excitement started for the Ladycats as they headed into penalty shootouts to determine the winner. After two rounds of penalties, the Ladycats took the upper hand to give them the win of 6 – 5 over Mabank and the chance to play again in round three of the playoffs with hopes for the state championship.

Senior Kellen Floyd added, “We are just looking to focus on us and not the opponent. Make sure we have a good week of practice and come out hot. We can’t get sassy, but we also can’t get comfortable. We’ve just gotta treat each week like it is state.”

The girls will take on Athens while the boys take on Kilgore in a place and time to be determined for round three.
