A new summer internship program is being brought to Lamar County through the Chamber of Commerce who is opening the doors of the business world to our community.
According to chamber president Paul Allen, the program will open the doors for various people groups to see what business opportunities exist in Lamar County and to connect them with their personal interest. The initiative is unique in comparison to other programs as it will include opportunities for those with disabilities as well as many young people in our community.
“There is a place in our community for all that want to work but may not have had the opportunity to learn what it takes,” said Allen. “We are very excited to be partnering with Paris Junior College and Texas A%M Commerce-School of Social Work in this new project. Let’s make this connection with our future workforce.”
There are currently 20 business with commitments and interest to take part in the program including Everett Toyota of Paris, Lamar National Bank, Paris Regional Medical Center, Lamar County Chamber of Commerce, Paris Ford Lincoln, eParisExtra, Ballard Insurance, Paris Imaging, 1st Street Media, Hearts and Hands Healthcare, Kyle Jones, Downtown Food Pantry, United Way, Campbell Soup, Liberty National Bank, AltaTerra Realty & Auction, Boys & Girls Club, Mulberry Creek Nursery and On Top of It Catering.
Interns will be connected to the businesses listed above through area colleges, high schools, Christian Women’s Job Corp and Workforce Solutions Northeast Texas with internships lasting six to eight weeks. Interns are expected to work between 20-40 hours a week and businesses are able to hire more than one intern.
Students with disabilities hired through Workforce Solutions Northeast Texas can earn an income at no cost to the employer. Workforce Solutions Northeast Texas may be able to pay intern wages for eligible students.
Employers who are interested in the program can send a job listing to Paul Allen at the Chamber of Commerce where he will keep a database used to match employers and interns available for interviews. If your business is interested in the program but not able to devote a position to an intern, you may sponsor an intern to take part in the program at a non-profit agency.
The program includes a mandatory Job Traning Seminar for interns and the program is expected to be fully rolled out by June.
